Proud and Daring
Sicilians have always been proud of themselves, probably because they are aware of their glorious past. They feel above everyone and treat everyone as one’s equal!
The Sicilian is never in a hurry, not because he isn’t efficient enough in organizing his daily life; but only because he considers that nothing is important enough to trouble himself. The Sicilian does not speak much, but when he speaks, he speaks especially about himself, the splendours of his house, his marvellous family… Do not think he is a braggart; in reality he is always in good faith.Whenever he has to listen to somebody else, he might die of boredom, unless you arouse his curiousity ( it happens only rarely!).
Can a Sicilian be unpleasant? Absolutely not! In fact, usually from his pride springs a long series of qualities and virtues. He will never sponge anything off, instead, he will quarrel to pay for a round of drinks, an “aperitivo”, a coffee… It is never a question of money for him; moreover, he will never ask you to return 5 or 10 Euros, that you borrowed from him last week.
A Sicilian would never invite you to his house for a dinner and offer you the “leftovers” or any frozen food: he would never let you spend the overnight in a camp bed arranged the last minute in his house corridor: be sure, he will do all his best to make you feel home ( although of course, he will give you to understand that the eight courses dinner served by the two waiters- hired for the occasion- make part of the daily routine!)
Once the Sicilian is absolutely certain you hold him in high esteem, he will be your friend forever! Friendship is really important to him: he will dedicate much of his time in cultivating a sincere, faithful and long relationship with all his friends. And obviously he pretends you behave exactly the same way. The Sicilian will buy you lots of presents, but be careful: do not ask him to buy you a washing-machine or an iron, although you desperately need one! He would feel humiliated ! No, the present must be his choice and usually he buys something gaudy: a huge glass vase or a silver plate tray. In other words a Sicilian will never be sparing or mean. He knows that generousity is a virtue of gods, thus his own virtue!
